Princess Opeyemi Bright
Princess Opeyemi Bright was sworn in as the youngest mayor of the United Kingdom, marking a significant milestone for youth leadership and Nigerians living abroad. She is currently 29 years old and the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
The Friday, May 16, 2025, inauguration commemorates Nigeria’s worldwide leadership and ushers in a new era in British politics.
Princess Bright was born in the UK to Nigerian parents, and her ascent is regarded as both a personal achievement and an example of the expanding power of Nigerians overseas.
During her inauguration, Princess Bright declared, “This is nothing short of God’s grace.
“I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”
Bright’s political career started early; she was elected as a councillor at the age of 22, and she has been fighting for economic possibilities, social inclusion, and youth empowerment in her borough for the past seven years. Her commitment to service stems from her upbringing.
She is the daughter of Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a senior preacher in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who was Hackney’s Civic Mayor from 2006 to 2007. Her candidacy serves as a symbol of a broader pattern: Nigerians’ expanding political influence abroad.
For many, Princess Bright’s story is a symbol of tenacity and inspiration, demonstrating that Nigerian youth can flourish and lead anywhere in the world with support, values, and opportunity. Her victory also challenges stereotypes about youth apathy in politics and reaffirms the impact of women and immigrants in leadership. Additionally, it strengthens Nigeria’s soft power at a time when positive narratives about the country are desperately needed.
Congratulations
