Police are urging Nissan owners across South Yorkshire to remain vigilant following a surge in keyless car thefts targeting popular models such as the Nissan Navara and Nissan Juke.
According to South Yorkshire Police, 30 vehicles have been reported stolen since the start of August, with offenders using sophisticated relay technology to bypass vehicle security systems.
How the Thefts Work
Investigators say criminals are exploiting the convenience of keyless entry systems by using electronic devices that mimic key fob signals.
This allows them to unlock and start vehicles without physical access to the key — often within minutes and without any visible signs of forced entry.
“These thefts are fast, discreet and can happen right outside your home,” South Yorkshire Police said. “We’re asking residents to remain alert and take practical steps to protect their vehicles.”
Police Recommendations for Car Owners
South Yorkshire Police have issued a series of precautionary measures to help drivers reduce the risk of becoming victims:
- Store key fobs in a Faraday bag (signal-blocking pouch) when not in use.
- Park in well-lit or secure areas, and consider using a steering wheel lock as a visible deterrent.
- Install tracking devices to help locate your vehicle if it is stolen.
- Be aware of suspicious behaviour, particularly anyone loitering near vehicles with electronic devices.
- Regularly review CCTV or doorbell footage for unusual activity.
Police Efforts and Community Support
Officers say tackling vehicle theft remains a priority, with specialist patrols and technology being deployed to disrupt organised theft networks operating across the region.
“We have dedicated teams proactively patrolling and using advanced tactics to track offenders,” the spokesperson added. “However, our resources are limited — community awareness and quick reporting play a crucial role in prevention.”
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity or information about vehicle thefts by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency. Information can also be shared anonymously through Crimestoppers.
A Growing Concern Nationwide
Keyless car thefts have risen sharply across the UK in recent years, with police and insurance experts warning that criminals are increasingly targeting vehicles equipped with advanced electronic systems.
Motorists are advised to combine digital and physical deterrents to stay ahead of the evolving tactics used by car thieves.
