SHEFFIELD — For over two decades, the man known affectionately to the Sheffield community as “Shine” has dedicated his life to the service of others. A veteran of the healthcare sector and a former nursing student at Sheffield Hallam University, Shine has been a pillar of support for the vulnerable since arriving in the city in 2002. Today, however, the roles have been tragically reversed as he faces a life-threatening medical crisis that has forced him to seek treatment thousands of miles from home.
The crisis began abruptly in December 2024 when Shine was hospitalized after suddenly losing the ability to swallow food or fluids. Following a series of exhaustive tests and treatments, he received a devastating blow: medical professionals in the UK informed him that they had exhausted all available options. With a prognosis of only a few months to live, he was told the NHS could offer no further intervention.
A Courageous Gamble: Seeking Treatment Abroad
Refusing to accept a terminal sentence, Shine made the difficult decision to seek specialized care in India, where alternative life-saving treatments remain available. He is currently enrolled in an intensive clinical programme that integrates chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and complex surgery.
While the medical team in India has provided a new sense of hope, the logistical and financial barriers are immense. The cost of international hospital care, combined with essential living expenses while undergoing treatment abroad, has begun to overwhelm his personal resources.
The Community Rallies
A grassroots campaign led by Thomas Godzi and friends of the Sheffield nursing community has been launched to raise £30,000 to sustain Shine’s treatment. To date, the community has shown significant support, but a substantial gap remains to ensure he can complete the full course of his medical regimen.
“Shine has spent his life looking after us,” one supporter noted. “Now it is our turn to look after him. Every contribution represents a fighting chance for a man who never gave up on his patients.”
How to Support
The campaign is currently active and seeking urgent donations to cover ongoing hospital fees. Members of the public who wish to assist a fellow healthcare professional in his hour of need can contribute through the official fundraising portal
