ROTHERHAM – South Yorkshire Police have arrested a 41-year-old man following a firearms discharge in the Herringthorpe area last Friday. The suspect was apprehended on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, as well as drug-related offences.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:56 p.m. on December 19, when emergency services were called to a property on Goldsmith Drive. Specially trained firearms officers deployed to the scene confirmed evidence consistent with a shooting.
Following a 48-hour investigation, the suspect presented himself at a local hospital on Sunday, December 21, with injuries consistent with a firearms discharge. After receiving medical treatment, he was arrested and subsequently released on bail pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Claire Moss, of the Armed Crime Team, confirmed that forensic teams and detectives are continuing to work “at pace” to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Since this incident was reported to us, detectives and forensic teams have been gathering evidence in relation to this firearms discharge and the circumstances surrounding it,” DI Moss stated.
In response to the discharge, South Yorkshire Police have increased their visible presence in the Goldsmith Drive area. Officers have been conducting door-to-door enquiries and community patrols to address local concerns ahead of the Christmas period.
DI Moss emphasized that public intelligence remains vital to the success of the ongoing investigation.
“The information and intelligence you provide is absolutely crucial,” she added. “It could seem like a minor detail or something suspicious you’ve spotted—whatever it is, please tell us. Gun crime isn’t tolerated in South Yorkshire; it puts innocent people in danger, and we are doing everything we can to bring a stop to it.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident or suspicious activity in the Herringthorpe area to contact the police immediately.
