A Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom is seeking financial assistance to return home after facing mounting tuition debt and an impending visa expiration that has left her unable to regularise her stay or exit the country without consequences.
Fauziyah Ishowo, who travelled to the UK to pursue a master’s degree, said her student visa is due to expire in January while she still owes £3,790 in outstanding tuition fees. According to her, the unpaid balance has complicated her ability to formally conclude her studies and leave the country through official channels.
In addition to the tuition arrears, Ishowo disclosed that she is responsible for other financial obligations, including a £239.49 accommodation related charge. She noted that the combined debts have placed her in a vulnerable position as her legal status in the UK approaches its end.
Ishowo said she had initially planned to transition to a Graduate Visa after completing her studies. However, ongoing financial difficulties and challenges securing stable employment made that option unattainable. With limited income and increasing pressure, she said returning to Nigeria has become the most viable path forward.
To facilitate her departure, she requires £337 to cover travel costs. She explained that remaining in the UK beyond the validity of her visa could lead to further legal and immigration complications.
In a public appeal, Ishowo stated that her objective is to settle her outstanding obligations, leave the UK legally, and return to Nigeria to rebuild her life and pursue new opportunities. She described the decision to seek help as difficult but necessary given the circumstances.
The case highlights the financial and immigration challenges faced by some international students in the UK, particularly amid rising tuition costs and limited post study employment opportunities.
